What Preeti is and why Unicode is better

A Preeti to Unicode converter exists because Preeti is a legacy Nepali font that draws Devanagari shapes for ordinary Latin keycodes. A Preeti document therefore contains A-to-Z letters, and it only looks like Nepali on a machine that has the font installed; open it anywhere else and the underlying Latin letters appear. Unicode stores every Devanagari letter, vowel sign and mark as its own standard code point, so the same text can be searched, copied between programs and read on any modern phone or computer. Converting a Preeti file once makes it readable everywhere, for good.

When you have a Preeti document to convert

The usual reason to convert Preeti to Unicode is an old file that still needs to be used. That might be a report or a letter typed years ago, a template from a government office, a book or newspaper archive, or a piece of text copied from a website that was built with a legacy font. Converting it makes the text searchable, lets a spell-checker and a screen reader read it, and removes the dependency on one particular font being installed for the document to make any sense. A converted file is also easier to hand on, because the next person can open it in any editor without first finding a copy of the old font.

What a Preeti to Unicode converter has to undo

This converter cannot simply swap one letter for one character. The legacy font stores the short-i matra before the consonant it belongs to, draws many conjuncts as single glyphs, gives half forms their own keys and keeps reph as a separate mark, so the converter has to put those pieces back into the order Unicode expects and rebuild क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र from the keys the font used. Getting that order right is what separates a useful conversion from a row of random Devanagari letters. That ordering work is invisible when it is right and obvious when it is wrong, which is why the converter is tested against a fixed set of reference pairs rather than guesswork. Known limitations and tips

Plain prose converts well, but this page is honest about what it cannot promise. A reph can come back on the wrong side of its consonant, an unusual stack of consonants may need a manual fix, and a document that mixes two different legacy fonts will not convert cleanly. Only the Preeti layout is supported; no other legacy font is claimed to work. Convert one paragraph first, read the Devanagari carefully, and keep the Preeti original until you are satisfied with the result. See also Romanized Unicode typing .

Conversion runs in your browser

Your text is not uploaded. The mapping table is loaded together with the page and the conversion happens locally in your browser, which is what matters when the document is private or confidential. There is no account, no analytics script and no server call, so a draft, a contract or a personal letter can be converted without a copy ever leaving your device. Nothing is kept between visits either, so closing the tab leaves no copy behind on the machine.

Questions people ask

How to convert Preeti to Unicode?

Paste the Preeti text into the box above and the Unicode Devanagari appears as you type. Read the result and fix anything unusual (especially the ि matra, reph and the conjuncts), then copy it into your document with an ordinary Unicode font. To go the other way, use the Unicode to Preeti converter.

Is the Preeti to Unicode converter free?

Yes. The Preeti to Unicode converter is free, needs no account and has no usage limit. There is no sign-up, no payment and no trial, and you can convert as much text as you like on any device.

Is my Preeti text uploaded when I convert it?

No. The conversion runs in your browser as ordinary JavaScript and the mapping table is loaded with the page, so the text you paste is never sent to a server, logged or stored. That matters when the document is private or confidential.

Can I convert Preeti to Unicode on a phone?

Yes. The page works on a phone or tablet in any modern browser, and the two boxes stack so the input and the output both stay readable on a narrow screen. Paste the Preeti text, convert it and copy the Devanagari straight from the phone.

Which legacy fonts can be converted to Unicode?

Only the Preeti layout is supported here. The converter is verified against the Preeti key chart and 60 reference pairs, and no other legacy font (Kanchan, Fontasy and similar) is claimed to work. If a document was made with a different font, convert a sample first and check the result.

What should I do if the converted text looks wrong?

Read the output word by word, correct the few characters that came out wrong in your editor, and convert again from the original if you need to. A word with reph or an unusual conjunct is the most likely to need a small manual correction; the limitations section above lists what to watch for.

How is Preeti different from Unicode?

Preeti is a font that draws Devanagari shapes for Latin keycodes, so the file stores Latin letters and depends on the font being installed. Unicode stores each Devanagari character as its own standard code point, so the text reads correctly everywhere. That difference is the whole reason a conversion tool is needed. To see which key gives which letter, the Preeti keyboard layout page shows the traditional arrangement.
